Even if "man does metaphysics as he breathes" (Meyerson), it has become almost natural to consider that it is for the sciences to tell us what the world is made of and hence what it is. Metaphysics, for its part, could not teach us anything about objective reality: at best it can inform us about certain necessary features of what we think about it. Also, to reflect on the relations between metaphysics and the sciences, is it certainly to evoke their tense links throughout history and therefore the validity, for both of them, of certain calls to order. . It is then to suggest, to avoid scientism and apriorism, a few simple rules of good conduct. Finally, it is betting, at least if we want to rule out an idealism which threatens scientists and metaphysicians alike, on the double possibility of scientific realism as such and of a scientific metaphysics capable of telling us, without having to envy the sciences. , which is true, of course, of what we think of reality, but also and above all of reality in itself (Lowe). These are the major issues that arise today not only for the philosopher and the historian of science and the metaphysician (in the traditional sense that we are used to giving these terms in France), but to the philosopher as such, to which, incidentally, certain crucial problems relating to language, knowledge or even ethics should never appear, in the more or less long term, as absolutely foreign.

La 4e de couv. indique : "Merleau-Ponty, malgré ce que peut suggérer une lecture trop rapide, a refusé de placer son entreprise sous le signe de l'anti-métaphysique. Certes, il a tenu compte des critiques antérieures adressées à la métaphysique, cependant il occupe une position originale et singulière dans le champ philosophique contemporain. Partant des travaux de la psychologie "gestaltiste" de la perception, encore largement ignorés en France aujourd'hui, et sur lesquels le présent ouvrage s'est beaucoup appuyé, Merleau-Ponty a été conduit à renouveler l'ontologie traditionnelle, pour élargir ensuite le domaine de la métaphysique à de nouveaux objets, jusqu'à remonter au mystère de l'espace et du temps. Un certain nombre de déplacements et de réagencements sont ainsi opérés, qui témoignent d'une réappropriation vivante de la métaphysique, à partir d'une finitude que Merleau-Ponty dit non pas "bornée" mais "militante"."

L’Etica di Spinoza è attraversata dalla tensione tra la centralità riconosciuta al corpo sul piano teorico e la sua marginalizzazione sul piano testuale. Da un lato la mente è inseparabile dal corpo, e l’uomo è l’inscindibile unità di entrambi. Dall’altro, il fine dell’opera è quello di indicare al lettore la strada che conduce a una libertà e a una felicità che sono innanzitutto “della mente”, e questo punto di fuga impone a tutta l’argomentazione una prospettiva prevalentemente mentale, nella quale la presenza del corpo si dirada, si fa più rapsodica e defilata. Accogliendo la sfida interpretativa lanciata da questo gioco di presenze e di assenze, il presente lavoro ripercorre con acribia i riferimenti alla corporeità disseminati lungo tutto il testo, rilegge le pagine più celebri a partire dai luoghi più marginali, restaura la rete di connessioni entro la quale i dettagli apparentemente più insignificanti manifestano invece il loro valore propriamente sistematico. Attraverso un percorso che parte dalla fisica dei corpi complessi e arriva fino all’amore intellettuale di Dio, e costeggia temi classici quali immaginazione, desiderio e virtù ma si sofferma soprattutto su figure periferiche come quelle del sonnambulismo, del delirio, dell’amnesia, l’autore ripristina la centralità del corpo in alcuni degli snodi fondamentali dell’ontologia, dell’epistemologia e dell’etica spinoziane. La teoria del corpo finisce così per apparire come il cantiere nel quale vengono costruite e articolate la concezione del rapporto tra parti e tutto, la spiegazione della vita e della prassi umane, la comprensione dell’identità personale e della sua socializzazione.
